Malcolm Blackie, Agricultural Economist
Malcolm Blackie is a Zimbabwean of British origin who, together with Paul Thangata, set up the network in 2005. He took a degree in agriculture and worked as a land use planning officer in Zimbabwe for several years. He then studied in the US and Britain. With a PhD in agricultural economics, he worked with smallholders in the South Pacific for some years until returning to Zimbabwe in 1980 to set up the Faculty of Agriculture at the university in Harare. He joined Rockefeller Foundation in 1986 and established their agriculture programme in southern Africa. Ill health forced his retirement in 2000 but he remains actively involved with development policy, mainly in southern and eastern Africa. He travels and works extensively in the region, as well as being a visiting research fellow at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England.
